Key Information on Larocaine Powder

What is powdered cocaine?

Powdered cocaine (cocaine hydrochloride) is a stimulant derived from the leaves of the coca plant, which originates in South America. Initially used as an anesthetic in the late 19th century, its medical applications have largely been replaced by safer alternatives. Nowadays, it is primarily abused for its intense euphoric effects.

What does it look like?

Cocaine generally appears as a fine, white, crystalline powder.

How is powdered cocaine abused?

Typically, powdered cocaine is snorted (inhaled through the nose), though it may also be dissolved in water and injected. When snorted, the drug is absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal membranes and reaches the brain within 3 to 5 minutes, producing its euphoric effect. If injected, it enters the bloodstream immediately, reaching the brain within 15 to 30 seconds.

Who uses the drug?

Individuals of all ages may use cocaine. According to the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, an estimated 27,788,000 U.S. residents aged 12 and older have used some form of cocaine at least once. Roughly 6 million of these individuals have used crack cocaine. Cocaine use among high school students is particularly concerning—7% of U.S. high school seniors have used the drug at least once, and 2% have used it in the past month, according to the University of Michigan's Monitoring the Future Survey.

What are the risks?

Powdered cocaine is a potent central nervous system stimulant. Users may become restless, irritable, and anxious. Its use can also cause blood vessels to constrict and can increase temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Severe health risks like heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, and seizures can also arise from cocaine use. Combining cocaine with alcohol heightens its euphoric effect and significantly increases the risk of sudden death.

Cocaine is highly addictive. Chronic users often develop tolerance, requiring larger doses to achieve the same euphoric effects they initially experienced. Many addicts report eventually being unable to achieve the drug's positive effects at all, leading them to use more frequently.

Cocaine users who inject the drug also face additional risks, such as contracting HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other blood-borne viruses.
