But there was no way I was going to buy one when I still had a few disposable razor heads left for my Gillette Mach 3. Well, the disposable heads ran out and it was time to source a bamboo safety razor. You can get 100% metal razors but I just think the bamboo ones look lovely. Why I Love my Bamboo Safety Razor and Will Never Look Back

It&#;s made from sustainable materials

The safety razor I own has a handle made of bamboo, I went for the slightly thicker version as I felt it would be easier to use. The rest of the razor is made from stainless steel and the packaging is entirely plastic free. Mine even came with a jute travel bag. Bamboo is one of the most sustainable materials there is.

The blades can be recycled

The only part of the razor that is disposable is the blade, but the ones I have are made of chromium-ceramic, tungsten and are platinum plated. Give the blades a wipe after using them up to 8 times and they can be recycled in a metal recycling bin. The blades are double sided, so you can use each side of the blade 8 times.

It gives a good shave and smooth skin

It really did surprise me how smooth my legs were after shaving. We&#;ve been told for years that more blades are better, this is clearly not entirely true. Read about my shaving experience below.

It looks great

How things look is not as important to me as how damaging they are to the planet. However I find that I much prefer items made from natural materials. They just look so much nicer. Not only that they tend to be better made, meaning you know they&#;re likely to last longer as well. A razor is an essential item* to many people so you might not think it&#;s important for them to look good, they just need to do their job. But why shouldn&#;t normally boring things give us pleasure? I&#;ve never felt proud to show off my razor to people before. When I received this bamboo safety razor I showed it to my Mum, my sister and my best friend over Skype because I loved it so much! I&#;ve never done that with a razor before!

*It&#;s not really an &#;essential&#; item to be honest, I went through a phase of not shaving my legs or armpits but I just prefer the clean shaven look these days.

Using my Bamboo Safety Razor

I won&#;t lie I was a little nervous to use this. Everyone says make sure you read the instructions otherwise you could cut yourself, so there was a part of me that thought I was definitely going to cut myself. I didn&#;t and it was really easy to use. You do have to follow the instructions, but they&#;re really not hard to follow.

Basically there are 2 things to keep in mind:

2. Shave in the direction of hair growth

The shaving soap I used lathered up well and smells really nice. I used the &#;Charcoal & Cracked Black Pepper Shaving Soap&#;.

Shaving my legs

Let&#;s be honest, we all should have been shaving in the direction of hair growth anyway, but I don&#;t know any women that shave down their leg rather than up it. Anyway, after inserting the blade between the two parts of the detachable head, I lathered up some shaving soap on my legs and then very gently let the razor glide down the length of my leg. I didn&#;t apply pressure and the most interesting thing was that I could hear the hairs being cut. It didn&#;t all go smoothly, not all of the hair was removed on the first &#;glide&#; and shaving took very slightly longer than usual; probably because I was being very careful this first time. I couldn&#;t be happier with the results though. No cuts and completely smooth legs.

Shaving my armpits

Before I&#;d shaved my legs I was certain that they were the only part of me that a safety razor was ever going to be used on. However it was such an easy experience that I decided I should shave my armpits with it as well. I was prepared for a difficult and potentially slightly painful experience. I needn&#;t have worried, shaving my armpits was just as easy and they turned out just as smooth. My only advice would be to take your time.

I moisturised both my legs and armpits after shaving, I just felt it was a good idea. I was half expecting to have some kind of shaving rash the day after, especially under my arms. But no, both my legs and armpits were just very smooth the next day. I couldn&#;t recommend this razor more.
