You will get a lot of different opinons on this but fertilizer should be chosen by the results of soil tests. A lot of people like a certain blend for their area of the country that they live in. I was using a 20/20/20 water soluible but adverage soil testing in my area show a blend closer to a 1/2/1 mix will work better so I have orderd an 18/46/7 as that is as close as I have found to that. Havent tried it yet so dont know how it will work out. I also add a granular slow release to my mix.

Hi Macanic,
I will go along with Muddstopper. The mix I like is Plant Marvel which is almost the same as Muddstoppers mix Plant Marvel is a 16-45-7.

I usually add 1 lb per 100 gal water. I cover sqft with my 500 gal tank so that come to a little less than 1 lb per thousand sq feet. The fertilizer I use is equal to .34 lbs of nitrogen used at this rate. This is another reason that I like to use a granular fert along with the water solubile to bring up the nitrogen levels to 1lb per thous sqft. One other thing is that the nitrogen in the water soluible is almost all urea nitrogen and is subject to faster leaching out during periods of heavy rains or waterings. The granular will last longer, the water soluible will get it up faster

Also, I have been told that if more than 4 lbs per sq. ft. of seed is used you run the risk of a diease that can ruin your lawn in the long run. Any thoughts on this? One more. Have also been told never use more than 30% rye grass in any mix because of similiar problems. Source was from the largest seeding outfit in the N.E. Does this make sense or am I reading this wrong??? Thanks guys.
Muddstopper, Do you think a triple 19 would be o.k. to use along with the water soluable fertilizer? If so , what amount of it would you suggest to add to a 500 gal. unit? Also, I have been told that if more than 4 lbs per sq. ft. of seed is used you run the risk of a diease that can ruin your lawn in the long run. triple 19

A lot of people around here only use triple 19 and nothing else when seeding so it should work well. I have found that using a 1:2:1 ratio fert seems to work better for me although when doing roadbanks ect. I use the water soluible and triple 17. I dont believe the diease and 4 lb of seed on bit. Over/under fertilizing has killed more lawns than too much seed and is usually the cause of the diseases. Anything that stresses the turf will create an enviroment for disease. Not enough seed will create a starting place for weeds. As for the 30% rye to fescue, most seed companies blend a contractors mix of seed that is 80% Fescue and 20% rye. I do know that too much rye will choke out the fescue and keep it from coming up. It also growes faster than the fescue and will rob all of your fertilizer out of the ground so that the fescue doesnt have anything to feed on. The 30% is probably pretty close to to the max.

I use a mix called platium, I just used the last bag I had today so I cant even tell you who sells it, but it contains millet, annual rye, prennual rye, clover, weeping lovegrass, fescue and two different types of lespadesia. 1 fifty lb bag per acre and costs about $50.
