Recently, the news has been highlighted by incidents in cities like New York and San Francisco, where fires have been connected to Lithium-ion batteries used in these vehicles. Given the increase in popularity of these devices, as well as the warmer weather in northeast Ohio, Cleveland Public Power highlights essential safety measures associated with Lithium-ion batteries for this year's electrical safety month.

To ensure the safety of your electric bikes and scooters, ESFI has put together several safety recommendations on its website:
Essential Safety Recommendations
- Always utilize batteries and charging equipment provided or authorized by the manufacturer. Ensure that all equipment is certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory.
- Once charging is complete, disconnect the battery or charging device to prevent overheating.
- Charge batteries at room temperature; temperatures below 32°F or above 105°F can lead to complications.
- Keep batteries away from heat sources and flammable materials.
- Avoid storing batteries in vehicles or exposing them to direct sunlight.
- Have a qualified professional perform all maintenance on batteries and e-mobility devices.
If you notice any unusual signs, such as strange odors, color changes, excessive heat, shape distortions, leakage, smoke, or if the device fails to hold a charge, stop using it immediately. It’s crucial to prioritize safety in these situations.
