How to Make Solar Street Lights

If you land on this article, it must mean you have a solar street light project for your house, business, facility premises, parking lot or other applicable areas. Or perhaps you are interested in how solar street light manufacturers make these. Either way, you have come to the right place as we will show you how we produce solar street lights.

As a street light manufacturer, Heisolar prides itself on manufacturing top-of-the-line All-in-one solar LED street lights. And today, we share with you our process in designing, making and delivering solar street lights.

Knowing the Objective of Every Solar Street Light Designer and Manufacturer

Like any project, there is an objective. The idea of solar street lighting is to be a greener alternative to traditional street lights &#; to be a sustainable and smart technology that helps reduce carbon footprint and still present a reasonable investment cost.

In order to make a solar street light with the highest integrity, Heisolar assures that each of its components works efficiently together to maximize energy utilization with minimum loss.

Solar street lights are typically used for 12 hours a day with a dusk til dawn operation. The sun&#;s energy is harnessed and stored in solar panels during the day.  At night, they are used.

Since it is a smart street light, it should be adaptable to a power-saving mode as part of its smart feature. It should also be automatic in performing dimming action and on-off functions. This is to reduce energy loss and make the system more efficient than normal street lights.

What are the important components of solar street lights?

Solar street lights can be insanely difficult to understand and make, but they are very easy to install. There are several novel components that make up a solar street light. Each of these components are newly developed technologies. These include the solar panels, controller, battery, LED lamp, brackets and rotating platform and the pole. A set also includes a remote control to help control, manage and maintain the street lights.

Depending on the manufacturer, component types may vary. For example, some manufacturers prefer MPPT controllers over PWM solar controllers. Nevertheless, solar street light technology is a competitive arena so you get to have a wide range of options when you decide to choose and buy one.

Overall, these off-grid lighting technologies are built with versatility and offers advanced automation as compared to traditional street lights. Some designs can even be equipped with a GPRS street light control for easier surveillance and connection to wireless internet. With this, you can easily monitor through a PC or your tablet.

How each component are grouped into solar street light assemblies

#1 Solar Panel Assembly

The solar panel is manufactured from monocrystalline silicon, embedded with electronic components. This ensures that each PV panel has a maximized power extraction even on rainy days. This tracking method and power optimization is incorporated in a raw solar panel is called maximum power point tracking or MPPT wherein performance data is monitored and stored in the module.

The solar panel is attached to the pole and other components such as the battery through brackets and frames. The brackets are usually manufactured from aluminum as it is weather-resistant and lightweight. Aluminum brackets are either powder coated or anodized depending on the manufacturer.

#2 Battery Assembly

The battery assembly is composed of wires that permits it to connect with the PV module and LED lamp.   The battery itself is a deep-cycle battery designed to sustain continuous currents for longer periods of time. This type of battery is more efficient than car batteries and are more reliable in terms of cycle time. It can effectively discharge currents from time to time without deteriorating its capabilities.

There are two types of deep-cycle batteries used in the solar lighting industry. These are lead-acid battery and lithium battery.

Solar street light batteries are designed to have more than a day of charge. A typical design allowance is 5 days to sustain lighting during the winter and rainy seasons.

The battery assembly is kept inside an aluminum housing with vents to give off the heat produced.

There are newer battery assemblies that are designed to be more maintenance-friendly as they are mounted at a lower height.

#3 LED Fixture

The solar LED fixture provides illumination at the proper light levels. There are many designs available for the LED fixture. Some may be decorative while others are modular. The LED fixture is attached to the pole through a bracket.

How to Wire Solar Street Light Assemblies

If you are curious to know about the wiring process itself, here is a simple diagram on how each solar lighting component is wired or connected.

What makes a Smart Solar Street Light?

One of the greatest advancements in solar lighting technologies is the smart All-in-one solar street light. It features an off-grid lighting solution with automatic, humanized illumination that is totally independent from electricity unlike regular street lights.

Only when these smart solar-powered street lights detect motion would it be providing illumination. They are also programmed to adjust dimming by itself depending on the distance of the object.

Thus, it can be efficiently used in many projects and areas such as roadways, landscapes, parking lots and open areas.

What makes it smart? As mentioned earlier, the solar panel is equipped with a smart controller and a couple of sensors. Furthermore, a solar street light is embedded with a programmable chip that permits:

  • Motion detecting

  • Sunlight sensing

  • Battery monitoring

Motion Detecting

A PIR sensor (short for Passive Infrared sensor) is typically used in automatic lighting applications. It is used to measure the level of incoming infrared rays. Upon detecting, it notifies a signal that a change occurred. Thus, it is used to detect motion and signal the controller to control lighting levels.

Battery monitoring

Metering of the voltage is essential to prevent overload and reverse currents low voltage. When the battery sense an overcharge, it simply reduces the flow of energy. When a voltage drop occurs due to a decrease in the intensity of the sun or an increase in electrical usage, it allows proper voltage regulation.

Seeking a Manufacturer to Make Solar Street Lights for You

If you want to order a couple of solar street lights from a manufacturer, you should answer the following guide questions first.

What type of area do you need a street light for?

There are many types of solar street lights. While some are used for roadways and highways, others are meant for garden lighting. So first, determine where you are going to use it for. Also, determine the size of the area and its length. You will need to give this information prior to quoting.

Is electricity available in your area?

Is there an accessible electricity source in your area of application? If no, you should first determine the feasibility of installing street lights in your area.

What are the lighting requirements?

These questions should be addressed so you may know the number of solar street lights that you need in your project.

  • How much illumination is needed?

  • How many hours should it operate per day?

  • Should the street lights have any special lighting features?

  • Should the street lights have dimming function?
