New parts, particularly ones that are significantly different in design than old ones, may require new wash processes to get clean. Sometimes, this may even require new parts washing baskets. Here are a few reasons why a new part might necessitate new baskets:
Reasons for New Parts Washing Baskets
-
Old Baskets Don’t Fit - When the design of a new part diverges significantly from older designs, the old basket may not fit the new part's dimensions.
-
Old Baskets Cannot Survive New Wash/Finish Process - Updated parts lines or new finishing standards may introduce parts finishing or washing cycles that the old baskets cannot withstand, particularly if more corrosive chemicals are involved.
-
Old Baskets Are Worn or Damaged - Baskets wear out over time, particularly if not originally built to the right specifications. Deformed baskets from years of stress need replacement, and introducing a new part can be the perfect time to do this.
In a recent custom steel basket order from a client who was starting production on a new line of gears and assorted parts, the above factors contributed to their decision to order new custom steel baskets.
The Needs of the Customer
To properly identify the customer's needs, we first had them fill out a custom basket questionnaire loaded with questions meant to reveal the details of what the baskets would be used for and the forces they would be exposed to. Understanding the specifics of the applications helps us better plan out the design of the basket and determine its required features.
For this particular customer, there was a need for two different custom-fitted basket designs as more than one type of part was to be washed. Both baskets shared several common features:
Common Features of Custom Baskets
-
Lids - Both baskets were equipped with hinged lids that latch shut to hold parts securely in place, preventing parts from falling out during wash/finish processes.
-
Handles - Designed for manual, bare-handed handling between processes, large handles were added to the exterior, and the baskets were thoroughly deburred to prevent injuries.
-
Dividers - Each basket holds six parts simultaneously in separate chambers, with permanently welded dividers enhancing structural integrity and preventing loss.
-
Materials - Made entirely from natural finish, grade 304 stainless steel, providing a good level of corrosion resistance and tensile strength at a cost-effective price.
Distinct Differences Between the Two Baskets
While both baskets are similar in many respects, there are notable differences:
For example, the dividers in the two baskets vary. Basket #837013 uses cut sheet metal laid horizontally with holes creating a grid for parts fitting, accommodating both short and tall sets. In contrast, basket #837016 uses steel wire bars dividing it into six compartments for rectangular parts. Additionally, basket #837013 is covered in fine wire mesh to prevent small parts from falling out, while basket #837016's frame remains open, fitting the specific part dimensions perfectly.
