Understanding Vulcanizing Conveyor Belt Splices

Vulcanization involves curing raw rubber by mixing it with additives under heat and pressure, often referred to as 'hot vulcanization'. Alternatively, 'cold vulcanization' involves using adhesives to bond the belt ends. Typically, vulcanization is the preferred method for splicing conveyor belts due to its superior strength, extended service life, and cleaner operations. While vulcanized splices are ideal for most applications, they are not recommended for operations that frequently adjust the length of the belt, such as extendable underground conveyors that require frequent additions or removals. The high strength of vulcanized splices allows maximum belt tension, enhancing pulley-to-belt traction without mechanical links like weaving or welding.

Steps in Vulcanizing a Belt

The procedures for vulcanizing a belt can vary by manufacturer, but generally follow these three steps:

  1. Preparation of the Belt Ends
    For fabric carcass belts, the ends are cut at a specific angle and pulled apart to reveal the plies. When dealing with steel-cable belts, the rubber cover is trimmed back carefully to avoid damage.
  2. Application of Adhesive Materials
    This step involves layering materials to form the splice, similar to constructing a sandwich. For steel-cable belts, the cords must be overlapped, and suitable bonding agents added. The same curing method applies to both belt types.
  3. Curing the Splice
    The materials are pressed together and cured through heat and pressure over a specified time to create a durable splice. The vulcanization process employs specialized materials, including cement and tie gum, which are often available in kits. While specific kits from manufacturers are recommended, generic kits for standard belt grades are also available.

Vulcanization can be categorized into two types: hot and cold. Hot vulcanization involves layering the belt's components and applying heat and pressure to form an endless loop. Cold vulcanization, which uses room-temperature adhesives, can also be effective though typically requires less technical equipment. Often, professional contractors with the necessary expertise handle the vulcanization process.
