Can steel be used for flooring?

Dec. 02, 2024

What is steel flooring and where should it be used?

What is steel flooring or grating?

If you are looking for more details, kindly visit KAIYAO.

Steel open and closed grated flooring is a cost-effective solution for large areas of flooring in industrial and commercial buildings. Steel flooring is versatile, quick to install, modify and remove. With an extremely high performance to weight ratio, it is low carbon and infinitely recyclable.

When correctly designed, this flooring can provide an efficient and safe means of access and movement for people and materials with a high slip resistance, an aid to ventilation, heat exchange and it is aesthetically pleasing, providing an open spacious feeling to indoor areas

Where can you use it?

This flooring is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, it is resilient and with a 25+ year life span even in harsh industrial environments. It is tough and requires no further finishing &#; it is the complete flooring solution. If a section is damaged it can easily be removed and replaced.

Open and closed grating is provided in individual panels, each nominally 1 metre wide by any length up to 6 metres. The most efficient use of materials requires the designer to consider the flooring type in conjunction with primary structural steel design.

Individual panels can be cut and shaped around penetrations such as pipework, ducting or to fit around equipment and structural elements. Edge protection can be fitted to any panel to suit its position in the overall floor plan.

We would be delighted to give further advice, specific to your project requirements on how to specify steel flooring.

Open mesh flooring is manufactured from an assembly of flat steel load bars assembled vertically and separated at pre-determined spaces by cross wires running at right angles to provide lateral restraint to the load bars.

Closed mesh flooring is open mesh flooring with the addition of a flat steel plate (Durbar patterned or plain) welded or mechanically attached to the top surface. The top plate provides additional stiffening and provides a smoother surface in areas where small, wheeled trolleys or FLT pump trucks are to be used for the movement of materials.

Project specific factors listed below, alongside compliance factors should be considered by architects and specifiers when designing with steel flooring.

Refer to BS -1:, Part 0 and part 1 for common design requirements, recommendations for installation and specification for the gratings.

Project Factors:

  1. Sustainability &#; minimum use of material to achieve the design objectives
  2. Access requirements &#; people, equipment, traffic movements
  3. Aesthetics/walkability &#; balance between form and function
  4. Slip resistance &#; coefficient of friction
  5. Size of openings &#; ball proof and air flow
  6. Pedestrian loads &#; UDL and concentrated
  7. Other Loads &#; point loads, wheel loads.
  8. Max desired deflection &#; L/200 up to 10mm on individual panels and 4mm between adjacent panels
  9. Maximum spans &#; clear span between supporting structural elements, simply supported or spanning over two or more beams.
  10. Panel sizes/weight &#; imposed loads, installation restrictions, future access/maintenance.
  11. Manufacturing tolerances &#; refer BS -1:, Part 1, clause 7
  12. Cut-outs/penetrations &#; number, type, shape and location
  13. Edge protection (toe plate) &#; perimeter, around cut-outs and penetrations
  14. Fixing down &#; friction v positive fixing (any anti-vibration requirements?)
  15. Other considerations &#; finished floor heights, ramps, connection to stairways, conductivity/isolation, corrosion protection.

We would be delighted to give further advice, specific to your project requirements on how to specify steel flooring. Please don&#;t hesitate to get in touch.

Types of Metal Flooring and Their Uses

Mar. 14,

With a wide range of materials and configurations, metal flooring finds its place in diverse settings, from industrial facilities to residential homes. Understanding the various types of metal flooring, their materials, and applications can help in making informed decisions for different projects.

Types of Metal Flooring

1.Steel Flooring:

Steel flooring is one of the most common and versatile types of metal flooring available. It offers exceptional strength, durability, and resistance to wear and tear. Steel flooring comes in various forms, including steel grating, steel plate, and steel mesh. These variations cater to different requirements ranging from heavy industrial use to decorative purposes in architectural designs.

2.Stainless Steel Flooring:

Known for its resistance to corrosion, stains and rust, stainless steel flooring is a popular choice for workplaces such as industrial workshops. Its smooth surface and durability also make it an attractive choice for architectural purposes.

3.Galvanized Steel Flooring:

Galvanized steel flooring is steel coated with a layer of zinc to enhance its corrosion resistance. This type of steel flooring can be used in outdoor environments, parking lots, and industrial facilities as it can withstand moisture and harsh weather conditions.

1.Automotive Industry:

Metal flooring plays a pivotal role in automotive manufacturing plants, where it facilitates efficient material handling, assembly line operations, and vehicle storage. Steel flooring ensures safe pedestrian access and equipment mobility, while aluminum flooring provides a lightweight yet robust solution for mezzanines and elevated platforms. Additionally, stainless steel flooring finds application in areas requiring stringent cleanliness, such as paint booths and engine assembly sections, ensuring product quality and worker safety.

2.Machine Shops:

In machine shop environments, metal flooring serves as a foundational element for supporting heavy machinery, workstations, and tool storage. Regardless of the types of metal flooring, it can withstand the rigors of machining operations, providing a stable and safe surface for workers to navigate and operate equipment. Stainless steel flooring, for example, is invaluable for chip collection and coolant drainage, enhancing workplace safety and cleanliness in metalworking facilities.

3.Warehousing and Distribution Centers:

Metal flooring for industrial warehouses and distribution centers meets a variety of needs from storage racking systems to walkways and loading docks. The use of steel floor tiles facilitates efficient material handling and forklift access, ensuring seamless operations within the facility. At the same time, metal floor tiles are stronger and more able to withstand the weight of the loads being transported in the warehouse.

Metal Flooring Benefits

-Durability: Known for its strength and longevity, metal flooring is a durable choice for industrial environments and heavy-duty applications.

-Versatility: With various materials and configurations available, metal flooring can be tailored to suit diverse requirements across different industries and settings.

-Low Maintenance: Metal flooring typically requires minimal maintenance, saving both time and resources over its lifespan compared to other flooring options.

-Safety: Many types of metal flooring offer features such as anti-slip surfaces and fire resistance, enhancing safety in industrial, commercial, and residential environments.

From stainless steel, to carbon and galvanized steel, metal flooring is available in a wide variety of types to meet the varying needs of industrial facilities. Whether in automotive plants, machine shops, or warehousing environments, metal flooring stands as a testament to durability, safety, and functionality. By understanding the unique properties and applications of each type of metal flooring, industries can make informed decisions to create resilient and productive workspaces for their employees and operations.
