Spiral bevel gear

Spiral bevel gear

A spiral bevel gear is a bevel gear with helical teeth. The main application of this is in a vehicle differential, where the direction of drive from the drive shaft must be turned 90 degrees to drive the wheels. The helical design produces less vibration and noise than conventional straight-cut or spur-cut gear with straight teeth.

A spiral bevel gear set should always be replaced in pairs i.e. both the left hand and right hand gears should be replaced together since the gears are manufactured and lapped in pairs.

Handedness

Spiral bevel handedness Zerol handedness

A right hand spiral bevel gear is one in which the outer half of a tooth is inclined in the clockwise direction from the axial plane through the midpoint of the tooth as viewed by an observer looking at the face of the gear.

A left hand spiral bevel gear is one in which the outer half of a tooth is inclined in the counterclockwise direction from the axial plane through the midpoint of the tooth as viewed by an observer looking at the face of the gear.

Note that a spiral bevel gear and pinion are always of opposite hand, including the case when the gear is internal.

Also note that the designations right hand and left hand are applied similarly to other types of bevel gear, hypoid gears, and oblique tooth face gears.[1]

Hypoid gears

Hypoid spiral bevel gears

A hypoid is a type of spiral bevel gear whose axis does not intersect with the axis of the meshing gear. The shape of a hypoid gear is a revolved hyperboloid (that is, the pitch surface of the hypoid gear is a hyperbolic surface), whereas the shape of a spiral bevel gear is normally conical. The hypoid gear places the pinion off-axis to the crown wheel (ring gear) which allows the pinion to be larger in diameter and have more contact area. In hypoid gear design, the pinion and gear are practically always of opposite hand, and the spiral angle of the pinion is usually larger than that of the gear. The hypoid pinion is then larger in diameter than an equivalent bevel pinion.

A hypoid gear incorporates some sliding and can be considered halfway between a straight-cut gear and a worm gear. Special gear oils are required for hypoid gears because the sliding action requires effective lubrication under extreme pressure between the teeth.

Hypoid gearings are used in power transmission products that are more efficient than conventional worm gearing.[citation needed] They are considerably stronger in that any load is conveyed through multiple teeth simultaneously. By contrast, bevel gears are loaded through one tooth at a time. The multiple contacts of hypoid gearing, with proper lubrication, can be nearly silent, as well.

Spiral angle

Spiral angle

The spiral angle in a spiral bevel gear is the angle between the tooth trace and an element of the pitch cone, and corresponds to the helix angle in helical teeth. Unless otherwise specified, the term spiral angle is understood to be the mean spiral angle.

  • Mean spiral angle is the specific designation for the spiral angle at the mean cone distance in a bevel gear.
  • Outer spiral angle is the spiral angle of a bevel gear at the outer cone distance.
  • Inner spiral angle is the spiral angle of a bevel gear at the inner cone distance.

Comparison of spiral bevel gears to hypoid gears

Hypoid gears are stronger, operate more quietly and can be used for higher reduction ratios, however they also have some sliding action along the teeth, which reduces mechanical efficiency, the energy losses being in the form of heat produced in the gear surfaces and the lubricating fluid.

Hypoid gears are typically used in rear-drive automobile drivetrains.

A higher hypoid offset allows the gear to transmit higher torque. However increasing the hypoid offset results in reduction of mechanical efficiency and a consequent reduction in fuel economy. For practical purposes, it is often impossible to replace low efficiency hypoid gears with more efficient spiral bevel gears in automotive use because the spiral bevel gear would need a much larger diameter to transmit the same torque. Increasing the size of the drive axle gear would require an increase of the size of the gear housing and a reduction in the ground clearance, interior space, and an increase in weight.

The hypoid gear is also commonly used in some railcar transmissions with diesel power units - where the engine and gearbox are similar to those used in traditional trucks and busses (not diesel/electric hybrid type drive). The transmission, to allow the input shaft to always rotate in one specific direction (either clockwise or anti-clockwise) while allowing the output shafts to change their rotational direction; thus allowing a vehicle to drive either direction.

Another advantage of hypoid gear is that the ring gear of the differential and the input pinion gear are both hypoid. In most passenger cars this allows the pinion to be offset to the bottom of the crown wheel. This provides for longer tooth contact and allows the shaft that drives the pinion to be lowered, reducing the "hump" intrusion in the passenger compartment floor. However, the greater the displacement of the input shaft axis from the crown wheel axis, the lower the mechanical efficiency.

Why Choose Spiral Bevel Gears?

Nothing beats the efficiency of spiral bevel gears when it comes to transferring power and motion. With their unique combination of strength, precision, smoothness, and quiet operation, they provide unparalleled performance for applications ranging from industrial machinery to automotive transmissions.
But what makes them so special? Let’s take a closer look at why spiral bevel gears are such an ideal choice when it comes to transmitting power and motion.

What are Spiral Bevel Gears?

From car differentials to power transmission systems and industrial machinery - spiraling beveled gears are a type of bevel gear with helical teeth uniquely arranged at a 90-degree angle.

For smoother and lower noise operation, the teeth are designed with a slight curve - allowing them to be applied in multiple useful applications. In short, these swirling bevel gears transform the motions of rotary engines into linear motion, making them invaluable mechanical tools.

What makes Spiral Bevel Gear Unique?

Spiral bevel gears, designed for high-speed operations, can greatly reduce the cost of ownership as they are perfect for heavy-duty applications and boast longer-lasting performance with minimal risk of repair or replacement. Not to mention these efficient mechanisms also have the ability to transmit power through a right angle.

Right-angle gears face a geometry dimension, yet spiral bevel gear teeth designs make these tools more space-saving and effective in comparison to their counterparts. Additionally, the load ratings of these spirals are substantially higher than other right-angle gear types.
With every increase in the quality of a spiral bevel gear set, efficiency also escalates while noise, heat production, and vibration reduction. When operating within optimal parameters, these top-notch gear sets can reach an astonishing 99% efficacy rate.

Application of Spiral Bevel Gears

Spiral bevel gears are a type of bevel gear with curved teeth that are set at an angle to the gear axis. They have several applications across various industries due to their unique design and features. Here are some common applications of spiral bevel gears:

  • Automotive Industry: Spiral bevel gears are widely used in the automotive industry, particularly in the differential systems of vehicles. They are essential for transmitting power from the engine to the wheels and enabling smooth torque transfer even when the vehicle is turning. Spiral bevel gears provide efficient power transmission, high torque capacity, and quiet operation, making them suitable for demanding automotive applications.
  • Aerospace Industry: Spiral bevel gears are used in aircraft systems, such as helicopter transmissions and jet engines. They help transfer power between the engine and rotor or drive shafts. Spiral bevel gears are chosen for aerospace applications due to their ability to handle high speeds, transmit high torque, and operate with minimal noise and vibration.
  • Power Tools and Machinery: Spiral bevel gears are found in various power tools and industrial machinery. They are commonly used in angle grinders, drills, milling machines, and lathes, among others. Spiral bevel gears in these applications help transmit power between the motor and the cutting or grinding tools, ensuring efficient operation and precise control.
  • Robotics: Spiral bevel gears play a crucial role in robotic systems where accurate and efficient power transmission is required. They are used in robotic arms, manipulators, and other motion control mechanisms. Spiral bevel gears provide smooth and precise movement, allowing robots to perform complex tasks with high accuracy.
  • Marine Applications: Spiral bevel gears are utilized in marine propulsion systems, such as boat engines and marine transmissions. They help transmit power from the engine to the propeller shaft, enabling efficient propulsion and maneuvering of vessels. Spiral bevel gears in marine applications need to be durable, corrosion-resistant, and capable of handling high loads.
  • Industrial Gearboxes: Spiral bevel gears are often incorporated into industrial gearboxes, such as those used in heavy machinery, mining equipment, and conveyor systems. These gearboxes require high torque capacity, smooth operation, and reliability. Spiral bevel gears provide these characteristics, making them suitable for demanding industrial applications.

Advantages of Spiral Bevel Gears

Higher Efficiency
Spiral bevel gears boast an efficiency rate of 96% to 98%, surpassing the capabilities of other types of right-angle gears. This translates to more power from the prime mover being utilized for work rather than heat generation.
Note: Factors such as quality number, ratio, and duty cycle also play a role in determining efficiency.

Multi-Purpose Usage
Spiral bevel gears come in multiple sizes and materials, making them ideal for a range of applications from automotive engineering to industrial machinery.

Greater Power Density
Compared to other right-angle gears, spiral bevel gears offer a greater power density in a smaller package. This means they can move heavier loads and generate greater torque in a smaller space.

Smaller Space Claim
Their compact nature allows for gearboxes incorporating spiral bevel gears to be designed with a smaller footprint, resulting in decreased weight, reduced space requirements, and, ultimately, lower costs.

Minimal Vibration
The spiral shape of the bevel gear teeth allows for a gradual and smooth engagement with other gears, resulting in minimal vibration. This makes spiral bevel gears a more peaceful option compared to other right-angle bevel gear sets with similar ratings and tooth finishes.

Smooth Operation
The curved design of the spiral bevel gears also reduces noise and vibration during operation, providing a smoother and quieter experience.

Less Heat
The most significant factor affecting the power output in a bevel gear set is heat created as a result of the contact between gear teeth. With significantly lower temperatures, additional cooling through oil is rendered unnecessary, thus increasing its operating life.

Reduced Upkeep
Thanks to their increased sturdiness, spiral bevel gears require less maintenance than traditional straight bevel models, saving you both time and money in the long run.

Higher Torque
Spiral bevels have a larger surface area in comparison with their straight and zero counterparts for the same pitch diameter, allowing more power to be transferred without exceeding the permissible stresses encased by the alloy steel.

Higher Speed
These gears are comparatively more reliable when worked at high speeds compared to other types of right-angled bevel gears with similar size measurements.

Better Life
Due to its Expansive Contract Patch, Traction Force Exrted on Spiral Bears is Much Weaker than Average Straight or Zerol Bevel d stress at the gear root and subsequently longer lifespan; benefit.

FAQs

1. How do I choose a spiral bevel gear?
When selecting gears, it is essential to ensure they have the same pitch and pressure angle. Pressure angles of 14.5° or 20° are standard for most applications. Helix angle should also be taken into account as this determines how the gear teeth align relative to their axis. For spiral bevel and hypoid bevel gears, it's essential that they possess opposite-hand tooth orientations in order for them to mesh correctly with each other.

2. How are spiral bevel gears made?
Spiral bevel gears are typically manufactured using a process called hobbing. This involves cutting the teeth into the desired shape using a specialized cutter called a hob. The process is precise, allowing for tight tolerances and high-quality results.

Conclusion

Spiral bevel gears are a great choice for many applications due to their high efficiency, versatility, power density, and smooth operation. They offer better torque and higher speed, have a longer life, require less maintenance, and generate less heat than other right- angle gear sets. With careful selection, spiral bevel gears can provide a cost-efficient and reliable solution for many engineering applications.
