What To Look For When Buying Diesel Generators

In industrial facilities, diesel generators provide supplemental or emergency power to pumps, blowers, elevators and other equipment throughout the facility in the event of an unexpected power outage. As a result, the temperature in the diesel generator exhaust rises rapidly from ambient to 700°F or higher - some manufacturers even report that the temperature in the exhaust can approach 1,000°F.

However, these temperatures are not consistent. Because diesel generators are used as a temporary solution to power loss, they undergo many heating and cooling cycles throughout the life of the unit as the generator is started up, shut down and restarted.

Diesel generator exhaust ducts combine these temperature extremes with a high-vibration environment that tends to damage less robust insulation materials. For example, at such high temperatures, mineral wool will burn off the adhesive and silica aerogel will thermally displace, compromising the thermal properties of both insulating materials.

Similarly, the harsh and demanding physical conditions of a diesel generator exhaust duct can physically damage expanded perlite. Depending on the location of the generator exhaust duct (indoor or outdoor), the system designer may also need to consider whether corrosion under insulation (CUI) is a variable to be considered.

Given these extreme conditions, selecting an insulation material that has the performance criteria needed to withstand the rigors of a diesel generator exhaust can help optimize system performance and life-cycle costs.

Configuration of Diesel generators

When selecting a diesel generator, the first question is what is the size of the load it will provide and what is the amount of running load (KW) and starting load (KVAr). What type of load will be supplied? Is there, for example, a UPS load or a heavy motor load? Is the load a steady load or an intermittent switching load? This is known as diesel generator sizing for site loads. The second question is whether the generator will operate as a backup power source or whether it will operate as the primary power source. The third question is how long will this investment last?

In other words, are we going to choose a heavy duty generator set that will last more than 5 years or will it last a few years. The location of the generator set and the environmental conditions. Are there noise restrictions? Are there space limitations? What voltage and frequency will this generator produce?

All these considerations will influence the final decision on which diesel engine will start, which alternator will be driven, what is the KW rating of this generator set, how it will be installed, what control system will be installed, protection level, cooling system, acoustics... etc. This is referred to as the diesel generator configuration for the site load. Acoustics... etc. This is known as the diesel generator configuration for the field load. Acoustic... etc. This is known as the diesel generator configuration for field loads.

Installation Recommendations

Best practice recommendations for diesel generator exhaust piping suggest using two layers of insulation 1. This allows for the exhaust piping to expand and contract during heat up and cool down without exposing the pipe directly to the surface through gaps in the insulation. In order to apply the layers appropriately, they should be offset from each other both circumferentially and longitudinally such that the outer layer covers the joints of the inner layer.

When installing insulation on long, vertical runs, use insulation support rings to support the weight of the insulation as well as expansion joints. As with all insulations, the system should be covered with a metal jacketing to protect the insulation and add an additional layer of defense against CUI.

When it comes to buy a diesel generator, except the price, there are a number of factors that must be taken into considered.

More information at this link: http://www.dieselgeneratortech.com

First thing you should consider is to know about the manufacturer history and reputation. It is always a good idea to go with a trusted manufacturer who has a reputation for producing equipment that can stand the stress and test of time. Besides, you should consider whether you will need a standy diesel generator or a dedicated generator. Dedicated generators are used when there are no other power sources on the site, or at sites that require a generator that is in use all day, every day. These are also known as prime or continuous generators. A standby generator on the other hand acts as a backup source to a pre-existing power source. These may be used when regular power is not available, during power shortages or other infrequent use situations. For industrial units, factory power requirements need to be considered along with on-site office power. Choosing a larger size is often the best way to ensure that your needs are covered, with enough power to last through emergencies.

Second thing you should consider is to distinguish the relationship between the KVA and KW. KVA isn &#;t equal KVA. Usually, the relationship between them is 1KVA=0.8KW. When you are going to buy a diesel generator, you should inquire the salesman and know about the generator unit is expressed by KW or KVA.

Third thing you should consider is to check whether the diesel generator muffler is good quality. The quiet operation is suitable for home use. It is always suggested to buy a low noise diesel generator or silent unit. Besides, you should ask whether the generator is fuel efficient before buying, Since some generators adjust their engine speed based on the load demand for greater fuel efficiency. Both fuel efficiency and fuel tank size will affect the run time.

Fourth thing you should consider is to tell the salesman what power you want to buy, what size you want to buy, the diesel generator you want to buy is for industrial or home use. What brand of generator you want to buy?

Fifth thing you should consider is that you should know about whether the diesel generator is made by manufacturer. Some bad manufacturers sale the diesel generators buying from market to users not their self-produced. Be careful of such generator. If you have enough time, you can go to the generator factory, observe and study, and check whether it is real. Some brokers or distributors pretend to be a genuine manufacturer and sale the generator to customer.

Sixth thing you should consider is to know about warranty duration. Usually, the warranty for generator systems typically ranges from one year to five years depending on the generator type. Where a residential generator may come standard with a warranty ranging from two to five years. However, an industrial generator may come standard with a one or two year warranty and other optional upgrades. It is a good idea to understand the warranty duration and coverage of your standby system, and ask for upgrade costs if you prefer an increased coverage.

Last but not least, you also need to consider whether you need a single phase or three phase generator. The age of the equipment and the total amount of hours that it has been used should be your primary consideration. Not just that, you also need to determine how the generator was being used. How well the equipment has been maintaned. Load test has finished because it determines the efficiency if the equipment when generating power.

Hope the above tips can help you choose your most satisfied diesel generator.
